The interesting, entertaining, and unusual new novel THE CROW FLIES, by Everett Applegate, has just been published. Everett, a native of the unique New Jersey Pine Barrens, is a friend and hiking buddy of mine during our winter stays in Baja, Mexico. He is a great story teller with a vivid imagination. I was pleased to be researcher and contributing editor for THE CROW FLIES, his debut novel.

THE CROW FLIES is told by Crow, who, inexplicably, has been bestowed with the gifts of thought and speech. After being hatched and abandoned in Central Park just weeks before 9/11, Crow is rescued by a kind but down-and-out wino, Travis. Soon after his first flight, Crow is befriended by undocumented workers on the roof of a world-famous New York restaurant, but soon experiences great personal loss when he is a witness to unprecedented death and destruction. When Crow meets the “Bird Woman of Central Park,” a Hopi spiritual woman, she recognizes his unique abilities and entrusts him with a secret message to her estranged family in Arizona. After trips of exploration to Atlantic City, San Francisco, and Las Vegas, Crow and Travis head for Arizona by motorcycle to deliver the message given to Crow. On their travels, the mischievous Crow experiences firsthand, good and evil, love and hate, compassion and rejection, corporate greed and environmental destruction, and the dangers of predators. He gains wisdom and confidence from all these experiences, and then uses them to negotiate an alliance between crows and falcons. Crow’s encounter with gangsters, a suicide prone girl, some rednecks, a paraplegic, a Crow Indian Chief, and smokejumpers are unusual. His casino gambling caper and apparent hijacking of a freight train are hilarious. Prone to nightmares and wild dreams of fancy that seem to shape his future, Crow eventually returns to Central Park to make a remarkable discovery. The amusing relationship between Crow and Travis, and the book’s compelling artwork will appeal to children, teenagers, and adults. Here is a contemporary novel you will enjoy reading to your grandchildren!

The Crow Fliers offers a deceptively simple fantasy that grows on your sensibilities and becomes more real as the story unfolds. It searches for the truth, while holding an X-ray to our culture. It is no ordinary road book, and by the journey’s end, you’ll discover the imperfect beauty of our country, as well as a promising new author in Everett Applegate. - Christopher Klim, author Everything Burns, Jesus Lives in Trenton
